According to the World Bank's new report entitled "Doing Business 2008", Denmark is the best country in Europe in which to do business, writes the World Bank in a press release to publicise the new report.

Denmark is in fifth place globally and no. 1 in Europe for best business climate. Heading the global list is Singapore, followed by New Zealand, USA and Hong Kong. Denmark has moved up from seventh place last year.

According to the World Bank, this is a unique position as Denmark has succeeded in catching up with the UK, which particularly in terms of language and infrastructure has advantages that Denmark cannot match.

"From a global point of view, Denmark is a rare example of a country that is able to be business friendly and still provide extensive social welfare," states the World Bank.

Moreover, the World Bank finds that it praiseworthy that Denmark, in spite of its high ranking, continues to introduce reforms that make it ever easier to establish oneself as an entrepreneur and run one's own business.

Countries are rated on a range of parameters such as the bureaucratic burden when starting a business, ease of hiring and firing employees, extent of Internet contact with public authorities, length of time to obtain a building licence etc.

Recently, an EIU survey ranked Denmark as having the best business climate worldwide.
